Share of members joining each year vs. how big the archive already was

Staying power: % of each join-year still subscribed today

Cohort retention to date — of everyone who first joined that year (active + since-churned), the share still with us. A fixed cohort metric, independent of the toggles above.

Cohort retention triangle

Each row is a join-year cohort. Read left → right to watch it decay: the leftmost cell is retention by the end of the join year; the rightmost (2026) is today. Darker = more of that cohort still subscribed.

Lower retention Higher  ·  cohort = year of first subscription; snapshot = end of each calendar year.
First joined Joined that yearOf all current members, the share whose subscription first began in this calendar year. Stands alone and sums to 100%. That year or laterCumulative: the share who first joined in this year or any later year. The headline framing — e.g. 80.6% first joined in 2020 or later. 2017 is 100% because everyone joined in 2017 or after. Episodes predatingEpisodes already aired before Jan 1 of this year — already in the archive when these members joined. % of catalogThose predating episodes as a share of today's 280-episode catalog. Still activeOf everyone who first joined that year (active + since-churned, incl. trials/gifts), the share still subscribed today. A cohort-retention metric — its denominator differs from the other columns, and it does not change with the segment/anchor toggles.

"Joined that year" is the per-year share (sums to 100%). "That year or later" is cumulative — it adds up that year and every later year, which is why 2017 reads 100%. "Still active" is a separate cohort-retention metric: of everyone who first joined that year (active + since-churned), the share still subscribed today — so its denominator differs from the other columns and it stays fixed across the toggles.

Scope. Stripe-billed members only; bank-invoiced institutional licenses and QCF grants are not in Baremetrics and are excluded — this is not a statement about total listenership. Anchor. "First-seen" is conservative: a member who lapsed and rejoined keeps their original date, so recency is understated. Segments. Institutional / bulk = Stripe-billed group and campus licenses (every one initiated in 2021 or later). Source. Baremetrics (Stripe source) + the ETS episode catalog.
